The studies on this page reveal the prevalence of acts of animal cruelty among the most depraved and malicious criminals in society.

Of the nine school shootings between 1996 and 1999, half of the shooters had histories of animal cruelty.[1]


The largest single survey to date of serial killers found:
36 percent admitted to committing animal cruelty as children
46 percent admitted to committing animal cruelty as adolescents
36 percent admitted to committing animal cruelty as adults.[2]



A 2003 study found that of 354 serial killers profiled, 21 percent were known to have committed animal cruelty, although it is speculated that more might have committed unreported incidents of animal cruelty.[3]


A Canadian Police study found that 70 percent of people arrested for animal cruelty had past records of other violent crimes, including homicide.[4]


Of 332 animal cruelty arrests studied by the Chicago Police Department,
70 percent of suspects had arrests on felony charges (including two homicides)
86 percent of suspects had multiple arrests
70 percent of suspects had narcotics charges (68 percent of which were for sales or trafficking)
65 percent of suspects had been charged with battery-related violent offenses
27 percent of suspects had previous firearms charges
13 percent of suspects had been arrested on sex crime charges
59 percent of suspects were alleged gang members.[5]


A Massachusetts study of 153 animal abusers found that within 10 years of their arrest, 70 percent were charged with other crimes:
38 percent were charged with violent crimes;
44 percent were charged with property crimes;
37 percent were charged with drug offenses;
37 percent were charged with disorderly offenses. [6]



An Australian study of convicted animal abusers found:
61.5 percent had been convicted for violent offenses against humans
17 percent had been convicted for sexual abuse
8 percent had been convicted for arson. [7]

those studies prove nothing. the only way to get accurate data would be to study all people who have never committed a crime against humanity and compare those with people who have. also, what constitutes animal cruelty? killing a deer? cutting a hogs throat? pulling the tail off a fire fly? pulling the leg off a grass hopper? i think it's safe to say the majority of young men and boys have done one or all of these things in the past. is it cruelty to spur a horse? that would make most of the west animal abusers. how about bull fighting or even bull riding? that brings most of the latin world into the realm of animal abusers. so then that would make some of the percentages in those studies rather low in my mind...or atleast average.

most academic studies can show whatever the administrators want it to depending on what their agenda is. very few studies are done in this country from a totally neutral and unbiased standpoint. i'll do a study to prove it one day [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

Animal cruelty is usually classified as mistreatment of a pet or someones pet - such as a dog, cat or whatever. So your argument with the deer and such wouldnt really do much to discredit those studies. Dogs are especially held in high regard with humans, because of the "mans best friend" characteristic that has been associated with them. I'd say almost all of those studies of "animal cruelty" that was mentioned had to do with household pets. Can't really compare hogs and deers with pets and to a lot "members of the family".

This is what a victim of a drunk driving accident looks like. I still think those convicted of DUI should be punished harsher. BTW, it's pretty pathetic to post pictures of this stuff imo, we all know what it looks like. Nobody thinks Vick should be set free, my whole thing is that crimes against humans should be punished more harshly.

And thats the problem with this whole dog lover thing. Why do you value one animal over another? You all can deny this non sense til your blue in the face but crimes against dogs are punished more harshly than other animals and in some cases humans which to me is despicable.

Who are you arguing with then really? I don't think anyone on here is saying that he should be punished more severely than murders, child molesters, rapists. It's not folks on here who say he should be punished for what he did that sat sentences on murders, child molesters, rapists.

This is about Michael Vick. Why do you keep bringing up other crimes by other people? They're unrelated to this topic!

YES they should get proper punishment too - absolutely and without a doubt. Don't be pissed because someone is finally getting a halfway appropriate punishment. Or is what you're saying is his punishment should be reduced because others aren't punished harshly enough?

And for the record Vick isn't the only one being punished on animal cruelty charges in Virginia. The T-Bone law makes it a felony to maliciously kill a companion animal now... and before Vick's case and after Vick's case came up there were others. One guy near Botetourt was up on charges that would get him 10 years for the killing of one dog. By comparison Vick got off easy.
